It is important that all teleworkers have the skills they need to work effectively in the chosen off-site locations. Three sets of skills should be considered:
- Standard job-related skills: Teleworkers should already know how to perform all the tasks associated with their job. If there is any doubt about the skills available, this should be identified, discussed and remedied as soon as possible, regardless or whether or not the employee is a teleworker.
- Technical skills: Teleworkers will not be able to get quick help with any aspects of their technology when they are working remotely. It is one thing to check how to make a network connection or perform a specific operation with a colleague at the next desk: it is much harder to do this over the phone or by email. All teleworkers should have a sound knowledge of all the technology that they will have to use when working remotely.
- Time- and personal-management skills: Away from the cues of the traditional office, including subliminal cues, teleworkers have to find other ways of managing their time and performance. For most this is not an issue—standard work routines can often be maintained regardless of where the work is performed. For others, the tips and suggestions provided here could be useful.
Employers setting up or managing a telework initiative should make a special effort to identify and remedy any gaps in their employees’ skills. Failure to do this could lead to a number of challenges—particularly for teleworkers.
Intending teleworkers should also be honest about any skills they feel they lack.
There are many organisations that can assist employers and employees obtain and maintain the skills they need. Many are available via the links on this website. In addition, specific questions can be asked on the discussion forum—there are many experts subscribed to this forum.
Finally, teleworkers should identify any community-based sources of help or assistance. Local computer shops or neighbourhood computer support organisations can be helpful, for example.
If your organisation provides telework-related training or has utilised the services of a relevant training organisation, a link to such resources could be placed on this website to help other companies. Please forward such information to admin@teleworkaustralia.net.au.
