Background

In its 2004 ICT election commitment, the Australian Government committed to establishing a telework taskforce consisting of government agencies, industry and small business representatives, to advise on options and impediments to the development of telework for employees and businesses.

In response to this commitment, the Australian Government established the Australian Telework Advisory Committee (ATAC). The final meeting of ATAC occurred on 27 February 2006. During this meeting, ATAC presented its report to the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations. The report included analysis of drivers and impediments to telework and recommendations regarding the role of Government.

ATAC recommended that Government encourage the growth of telework and proposed six key actions to boost telework uptake:

  • Management training;
  • Building technological capacity;
  • Establishing a Telework Online Resource Centre;
  • Promoting and supporting telework in the Australian Public Service (APS);
  • Research and modelling; and
  • Promoting the benefits of telework and telework better practice.

In support of these recommendations, the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (now the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy) proposed a Telework Awareness Initiative and issued a request for tender. Telework New Zealand was awarded the contract to deliver the Telework Awareness Initiative.

Telework New Zealand has been working in both New Zealand and Australia since 1989, assisting organisations and individuals assess the potential of telework and implement appropriate telework initiatives. The company’s principal, Bevis England, has extensive experience of the subject and is widely recognised as a presenter and consultant in the field.

Telework Australia was adopted as the ‘brand’ for the initial components of the Telework Awareness Initiative, i.e. this website and its associated activities.
